The Business Years.

The concept of an athletic footwear store, that started in an attic in Gainesville Florida, grew to 250 stores by 1980. By the 80's the concept had been adopted by Footlocker, Footaction, Athletes Foot and numerous other sporting good chains.

In the fall of 1972, after moving to Gainesville, Florida  Marty joined with University of Florida  track coach Jimmy Carnes and opened a store that sold only athletic shoes. This idea was greeted with skepticism from those in the sporting goods industry who were hesitant to open accounts with a sporting goods store that did not sell baseball bats, fishing rods, etc.
